The Springall Program... Springall students can earn their High School Diploma, Certificate of Completion, or a Letter of Educational Achievement, by completing the designated coursework while at Springall. Our guidance counselor meets regularly with each student to be sure that they are on track to graduate as their IEPs dictate. Physical Education is critically related to learning skills, and as such an unparalleled program of adaptive physical education and sensorimotor training is provided on a daily basis for our students. As previously mentioned, personal counseling is an important part of the program, helping students deal with esteem and social/behavioral issues, and as an opportunity to tap into positive feelings and unique abilities. All students participate in thirty minutes of individual counseling and thirty minutes of group counseling each week. Positive Behavior Development is one focus throughout the entire school and is supported by trained professionals. Positive reinforcement is an integral part of the program. Using a cognitive-behavioral approach, students learn the skills necessary to become productive, successful scholars and individuals. Language and Speech Therapy is provided by a full time Communication specialist. Occupational Therapy is provided by a full time Occupational therapist. Our OT works closely with all students, providing guidance in sensory strategies and recommending specific sensory diets as needed. The OT can also recommend strategies to be used within the home and community. School-to-Life Transition Skills are developed by classroom and support staff who help with nutrition, life skills, job-related academic and social skills, vocational awareness, self-confidence, and job training within the community. Much of this program is made possible by the California Workability 1 Grant, which we have been consecutively awarded for over five years now. Springall's Transition Program provides students age 17-21 with an alternative learning environment to continue to meet their IEP and ITP goals. Students can earn high school credits, college credits, or work towards completing their GED. The program is housed on our campus, however, students spend the majority of their time out in the community. Examples include the opportunity to participate in adult education programs, Community College classes, volunteer opportunities, and also paid employment within the community. This semester, some of our students have joined a bowling league and also work out at the local gym.
